Peridot Motel offers cheap hourly rates. He uses the money he makes there to rob unsuspecting clients for money to aid his family. When he accidentally runs into the older Martha, things begin to shift for Gabriela as he starts to form a caring relationship with her.
But when Gabriela leaps, he starts to fall into the relationship and the more shapeless Martha is waiting firm with love. Peridot deals with the theme of love and loss through the eyes of two people Mariana is a widow, a sunken mother, and ill with her sickness slowly taking over.
If thirst traps are what you are searching for, this is not the film for you. It starts with a dry Gabriel but is filled with sexual pieces that do not meet expectations.
Peridot deals more with connections and the affection the characters have for each other. It also has a rather short runtime of 62 minutes so it does not explore its own story as deeply as it possibly could. By the way, in case you didn’t know, Peridot is a stone associated with prosperity, good fortune, and affection, which is exactly what the characters bring to each other. There is also a bit of violence and drug use, so you have been warned.
Writer and Director Shayne Pax cites My Own Private Idaho as one of the sources of inspiration for Peridot. If you have not watched, it is a cult classic starring Kiua Reeves and the late River Phoenix, a 90s flick. The film left audiences shocked with its open portrayal of life as a gay hustler, along with the social justice issues that accompanied it.
Alongside Gabriel, life on the streets is depicted harshly in Peridot as well. You will get that indie flick feeling throughout as Pax proves that with a low budget, sometimes all it takes to make a film is a good story.
