Indeed, it is true that you can write, direct, and produce your film, which a lot of great filmmakers do, but it is also fairly prudent to consider whether you possess the necessary skills to function effectively in all of these aspects of filmmaking.
Swiped, the 2018 coming of age romantic comedy film, written, produced, directed and executive produced by Ann Deborah Fishman and distributed by Netflix and iTunes, is in a league of its own when it comes to Hollywood mediocrity.
I try as much to avoid being overly critical of any form of art, as much goodwill and good intentions would have gone into it because, no one sets out to make a bad film. But this particular film does not help itself in any way at all, and you will see why below.
Swiped recounts a story where a college student, James, who is played by Kendall Sanders is asked for assistance by his friend and classmate, Lance, Noah Centineo’s role so he could devise a hookup app that would serve as a matchmaker for people around the campus. This seems like a basic plot, right?
Still, the filmmakers responsible clearly went out of their way to make and ruin this story so profoundly that there is no doubt in my mind that this story was written by a film school fresher trying to make a film from an Inception screenplay.
To begin with, the acting that was performed was subpar, to say the least, in fact, it was one of the worst that I had ever come across. There was no form of chemistry or relationship among the characters. At some point, shouldn’t one be asking if there was ever a reading that preceded the principal photography? Where was the director on set, and did she actually approve of what was perceived to be an acceptable performance?
That’s not to say that some of the messages that were conveyed through the film were also unrealistic and slightly over the top. For example, it begs the question, don’t all the young women in college already fall in love at first sight?
Even for a woman-directed film, there is no modern representation of a woman in a relationship. The portrayal of women seems to belong to a time when they graduated college in the 1960s, which makes no sense in today’s society.
In addition, the film seems to promote the idea that men do not want any form of commitment and instead casually date. One of the most popular quotes in the film exemplifies this “Women are abundant. I plan on having intimate relations before I go into a serious relationship.” Lance
In some cases, this may be true, but it is not the reality for everyone.
In my opinion, there is no movie devoid of any positives. In my eyes, Swiped has some positives. While trying to boast the title of ‘world-class’ cinematography is mediocre, they are still acceptable for a film of this stature.
Moreover, we cannot disregard how much of a difference technology has made in the lives of today’s youth, and this was shown, albeit imperfect, in this film. At least, these are some takeaways from the film that would be considered positives. Because of Swiped’s opportunity for redeemable moments, they are not enough to save this film in any shape or form. Stereotypical, boring, unrealistic, and uncreative, are the words that come to mind when describing this film. If she plans on making future films, this director needs to go back to school because she clearly lacks the fundamental principles of filmmaking and underwent, for whatever reason, a complete writing, directorial, and technical blockade. For movie lovers who appreciate the premise of Swiped, other movies that are like it and better are out there that you may enjoy. ‘Sixteen Candles’ The Perfect Date and ‘10 Things I Hate About You’ are some of the movies that you should check out.
