For some people, gambling is a game of chance, while for others it involves strategy and objective thoughts. For leisure, one can gamble at the local city casino, through the internet, or even from a friend’s house utilizing nothing more than a deck of cards. Most friends prefer playing for enjoyment and do not place bets. In some instances, they bet on other things. However, these aren’t the only locations that provide gambling and betting opportunities with the hope of achieving financial success. There are more places, which more people would like to remain unknown because of the danger involved. One of the most dangerous locations to gamble is within the notorious private clubs in the underground of your hometown. There is little to no guarantee how the whole experience will end when you engage in such risky behavior.
No one does a better job at capturing the risk as Matt Gallagher does in his documentary Grinders. This film stands apart from the rest because it centers around a real-life story unlike most poker films that are either fictional or only somewhat based on real events. Grinders follows the journey of a filmmaker who goes broke, witnesses his profession go south, and is too financially unstable to provide for his wife and child. So what’s the solution? He resorts to the last option anyone would choose, playing poker with the underworld in hopes of making a fortune, and as you can imagine, things do not go as planned. Matt speaks to some of the grinders who share their remarkable life stories. These individuals play over two hundred games a day and always strategize to increase the stakes.
While reviewing, he describes his personal life and aspirations to move to Vegas. Alongside, he speaks of Grinders Andre and Danny, former grinder Daniel Negreanu who extremely wealthy because of sheer luck, and Lawrence who is the proprietor of a private gambling establishment in Toronto.
In addition to Matt’s story, he deals with losing money, and has another baby coming, which is a fifty-fifty chance for him. Lawrence’s situation is far worse as his landlord has closed his place down and he is really struggling to get it reopened, Danny and Andre also have to deal with the luck and unluck issue as Danny moves it out to the other side of the country to championship poker tournaments to get lucky and win a lot of money. Andre himself has plans to make money too by sending in an audition for a reality television show where he hopes to leave Canada and become a professional card player. This documentary has so much but one of the things I found to be most unique is that it covers a single part of the city which rarely gets attention and not only focuses on that area, but also how some of the people who are so called ‘grinders’ feel about their way of living and what it is like to take part in such a risky and high stress lifestyle. But if you look close enough, you can see that not everyone who does it is a criminal.
The documentary investigates how these people are living off of it and how losing is simply not an option because their life depends on making money through this very important but sketchy system. It is worrisome, but whatever keeps the lights on I suppose. You also get to understand some of the techniques that some of these players use while playing Texas Hold’em, and the very basic underlying principles of the game. Not so much in the way of learning playing a card game but in the way of learning to protect yourself. Along with the fact that life sometimes resembles a card game, there are many unknowns. Take my advice and don’t go too far off the deep end like Danny. Getting into the games is most certainly easy if you have the necessary skills to play poker on the web. You’re bound to get lucky, just don’t forget that the gamble needs to be reasonable.
