I’m beginning to realize that it’s not only the heterosexual community that has trouble dating. I’m sure most of the gay men who don’t engage in one-night stands are finding it difficult to date as well because they are more focused on filming movies discussing how dating is an issue for them. Actually, what they need is support systems so these people can meet because, judging by the films, everyone in the world feels they are alone when in actuality there are countless others, none of them talking to each other.

At 35 years old, Ben is still single and on the search for his soulmate. He’s tried video dating and the online world, but nothing seems to work out. His friends label him a commitment-phobe, and in the meantime, try to hook him up with every gay man they come across. One day, he sees a man jogging outside his house. While he’s been making an effort to see him more often, Ben has never actually made a move. After some forced circumstances, he discovers that the man is named Grey. They get along really well but do their stark differences mean that they are doomed from the start?

Shut Up & Kiss Me is both fun and heartwarming, although its plot revolves around issues that many modern gay men in their 30s face, making it feel pre-existing. Unfortunately, this seems to be the recurring problem with the show. Whether it’s a reality or just another fictional story it feels familiar to every show that considers itself a pioneer in discussing modern-day gay relationships. It doesn’t contrast ‘The Other Side’ in any aspect which can be seen as its drawback.

This might also explain why the film tries to cover too much ground, to the point where it becomes unfocused. The first half focuses on dating and the latter half shifts to relationships, in each portion, it weaves in a multitude of ideas ranging from fear of commitment, sex, HIV, and negotiating monogamy versus those who want to have casual sexual interactions. There is so much happening that there is little time to explore any one aspect too deeply. Instead, it is presented that there are so many issues at hand that need answers, but in most cases, there are none.

Even though it suffers from a few problems, Shut Up & Kiss Me is a nice and funny movie, especially towards the end when romance blossoms between Ben and Grey. While the movie does try to add an interesting twist to the ending, upon reflection, the conclusion is quite broad and does not solve the issues presented at all. Ben desires monogamy, while Grey is convinced that he needs to have sex with other people. They discuss it at length, but the film ultimately chooses to remain indecisive which makes it incredibly fuzzy.

If you are looking for a gay-themed film but do not want to be bombarded with bars, adorable twinks, and endless amounts of sex, piquant moments, including what might just be the first erection in a 15-rated movie, then Shut Up And Kiss Me is perfect for you. There is considerable humorous value in it as well. Even so, I felt a bit irritated that the film lacked focus and would have greatly benefited from deciding what theme they wanted to portray instead of trying to include everything there is to gay dating and relationships.

Final Thoughts In its attempt to encompass all elements of the gay dating world beyond the bars and cliches, Shut Up & Kiss Me extends itself too much. Consequently, it ends up not saying much about anything. In any case, it is still enjoyable, extremely darling, and occasionally quite steamy.
