Stranger in the Woods
Stranger in the Woods: Olivia (Holly Kenney, who also penned this film) is on a heavy dose of medication following an attempted suicide, or as she puts it, an unprovoked attack in her home. Her best friend Sam (Brendin Brown) proposes a trip to the mountains with Olivia and her friends, and decides to take them to a cabin. Sam’s reclusive brother Clayton (Teddy Spencer) is a nearby neighbor who lives off hunting, cooking, and skinning animals for purposes of taxidermy.
Nonetheless, more chaos ensues in the course of the weekend as they grapple with Clayton’s erratic behavior and Olivia loses her dog. Despite the ‘concern’ shown by her friends, who think she is vulnerable in her mind, Olivia thinks that she is being watched in the forest by someone.
STRANGER IN THE WOODS is in some way a mystery. Who was the actual assailant of the story, Was it Olivia who was assailed or she attempted to assail herself? There is no support for her friends when they accompany her, but they are all increasingly alarmed by Olivia’s persistent vulnerability. It is intriguing how a storyline in which every member of the cast performs quite well from beginning to end. I do not tell you if there is or is not a stalker. Would it be reasonable to expect that there is not a stalker in a movie?
That being said, there is no bad performer. STRANGER IN THE WOODS was written by Holly Kenney who also stars in the film as Olivia and directed the film and must accurately portray the emotions needed in this hopeless situation. Brendin Brown is also pretty good in the role of Olivia’s love interest as well since he gets some pretty strong material to work with.
However, the most remarkable character certainly has to be the eccentric Clayton who is played by detective Spencer, who talks about the most peculiar things making it very awkward for the rest of the group, which has been slightly portrayed in the film as cringe-worthy moments. The film really does an admirable job of building the characterization as even the lesser portions of the film, the rest of the cast members give their best effort.
If I am going to be honest, this is an all in all pretty ordinary little film which in my opinion feels more like a torture Lifetime thriller than a horror movie. Since the film starts out quite slowly, by the time things do finally accelerate it focuses for too long on whether or not people actually perceive events as Olivia sees them, or if only she does.
Having more violence and maybe a little bit more blood would have added depth to this film. As a result, I was left with a somewhat uninteresting final product, and though there are some very cool twists inbetween the story flow, many cliches were quite necessary for it all to work. STRANGER IN THE WOODS in my opinion is a movie worth watching finally. It’s not exactly a blockbuster, but the effort made in acting itself is quite commendable.
