The Thundermans Return

The Thundermans Return was directed by Trevor Kirschner who co-wrote the film with Jed Spingarn. The film was produced with the intent of bringing back the actors and the sense of affection that the audience used to associate with the original series that aired between 2013 and 2018; The Thundermans. Despite managing to get back most of the original stars such as Kira Kosarin, Jack Griffo, Addison Riecke, Diego Velazquez, Maya Le Clark, Chris Tallman and Rosa Blasi, the film disappoints in the sense that it fails to offer new and attractive storylines, instead, opting for old worn out plots and humor that is all too predictable and ultimately leaves a lot of room for improvement.

The movie revolves around a common plot or sequence of events they have all become accustomed to the Thunder family getting through life and through school but also battling evil villains. The V-team is first introduced when the meteor incident in Metroburg turns uncontrollable, resulting in the suspension of the Thundermans, and the familiar adventures of Max and Phoebe begin where the siblings are on a quest to restore their former superhero identity.

While one can appreciate the concept as something that would be quite interesting in the end, the charm and wit that were once the trademark of the series are nowhere to be found. The movie’s efforts to balance the comical family malfunctions and the action scenes lead to a muddled storyline that is only partially interesting. The introduction of the children of the villain for example to, broaden the scope of the story, comes across as weak because it tends to be more of an afterthought than a surprise twist to the storyline.

What was supposed to be a key aspect of the shows humor fails to come across as intended in the many given instances throughout the film. For instance, scenes that were portrayed in the trailer designed to make audiences laugh such as Nora and Billy trying desperately to make friends in school or a helicopter scene with Cousin Blobbin are unnerving due to how basic and recur as if they have been overused. There are also instances of poorly written dialogue as well, where there is a joke that was included to give better context to the expectations but only serves ineffectively for the desired situation.

The returning cast members should also be appreciated who did try to bring something new to the table. Kira Kosarin and Jack Griffo reprising their roles as Phoebe and Max Thunderman do have some great chemistry and were able to get some energy into the rather dull script. The fans of the original series will be happy to see the younger cast members Addison Riecke and Diego Velazquez put in some spirited performances.

Apart from the overall storyline there are some good moments during the special effects and action sequences. Though some of the moves performed by the superheroes seem quite comical, others seem to depend too much on CGI and don’t have that creative touch that would make them exceptional and above the average television show. This shortcoming damages the cohesion with which the plot of the film was built as viewers are unable to fully engross themselves into the world created by the Thundermans.

The Thundermans Return is a lovely film for all those people trying to bring back some childhood memories to relive them again and for those who are watching the movie for the first time. But it fails to convince either group effectively. It was a chance to delve into new ideas with the characters loved by so many, but instead of creativity, the film hinges on a timeworn template and lacks the magic of the original series.

The Thundermans Return is a pathetic sequel which is most likely to leave the fans of the former series yearn for the better days of the show. It’s no doubt fun watching the previous characters resurface again, however this film has unimpressive plot, trite comedy and general creativity. Despite a strong cast, the funny superhero comedy is a waste of time and space providing only glossed-in-nostalgia throwback that is more hurtful than helpful for the Thundermans’ legacy.
