The Russian scored a fifth round submission over MMA veteran, Dustin Poirier to defend his title although he appeared to have lost control of the bout later in the fight. Most of the fight was spent with Makhachev on top, although he was also taken down a number of times and came into Round 5 cut on the head, after doing everything else.
The whole fight was all though looked as if it would be easier rather in the first stanza even, when Makhachev cold cocked Poirier, took him down and sat on his back for 4 min in search of a choke or an arm triangle. Poirier survived all of them, but early in the second, he began to feel the ring. It is as good as impossible to get Makhachev on the mat and not get submitted. It was a similar reason why Poirier was able to stand up from him and deliver enough decent strikes to make things reasonably close.
With the support of the audience at the Prudential Center cheering for Makhachev. Considering judges’ opinions that American poirier was winning rounds 2-4 or 2-3 depending on where you ask an upset in the making and especially if he had taken round 5 was very much in the air. What a masterful strategy it was. But it wasn’t long before Makhachev finished that with a D’Arce choke, and barely moments later he was being battered by his corner as Poirier remained motionless on his back, probably out cold.
Itwas another fantastic performance of Makhachev where his creativity and skills were impressive. After which he says he would like to come for the welterweight champion Leon Edwards’ title next. Now he has defended it three times beating resume former featherweight champion twice.
“It’s my dream. I want to fight for second belt.” Makhachev said. “Because I would like this energy again, as long as you keep defending your belt, that’s not the same. I want more of that kind of feeling. A new one is required.”
With regards to Poirier, the fighting was still there but the 35-year old confessed very seriously he was considering hanging his gloves. However, he hadn’t reached 100% just yet and this was the third opportunity for him at the lightweight title which he had lost two times before via submission: Khabib Nurmagomedov who cornered Makhachev on Saturday and Charles Oliveira.
“Well If I were to fight again, what am I fighting for? Just to fight? I’ve done that 50 times already,” Poirier remarked. “I don’t know. I have a daughter whom I adore, I have to say. This could be it, truthfully.”
Let’s move on to the rest of UFC 302: Makhachev vs. Poirier. For those who enjoy decisions, it was a very satisfying night — a few decisions were also really confusing for the judges.
