Wallbanger
Wallbanger
Romantic Comedies are in enough numbers that it might feel like we are being flooded by them. They all follow the same pattern or something close to it and most of the time reach the same conclusion. But once in a while, we come across a piece that brings out the thoughts of – “Hmm, now this is something out of the box”. Watching Passionflix’s recent endeavor, Wallbanger, motivated me to think just that.
Wallbanger, directed by Tosca Musk and inspired by the book Wallbanger by Alice Clayton, tells the story of single interior designer Caroline who moves into what appears to be an excellent flat only to be disturbed by her neighbor Simon the “wallbanger.” The film stars Kelli Berglund as Caroline, Amadeus Serafini as Simon, and Simon often surprises Caroline with his activities.
Caroline’s husband has commanded her that she does not do anything dishonest anymore. But Simon’s activities make it quite simply impossible for Caroline to get a good tortured rest. But why do we call him “Wallbanger,” you might ask. He got the title due to Caroline and the fact that his activities are more entertaining than rest which literally makes her bang on the walls.
Only a while ago did Caroline accept her husband’s promise and participated in activities which can only be referred to as near-polyamorous. She is slowly turning around when she sees what she directs is a bear engaging with an escort. Caroline has no idea about the man’s name but simply the fact that he is intruding into her slumbering routine.
But she was pushed a bit too far and angrily came crashing to the door of Simon asking to come closer. Does the siege on Simon sound realistic enough for you? Well as a matter of fact it was her nick for Simon. You already know what his nickname for her is – I guess he was waiting for this moment.
It is at a party thrown by her employer that Jillian (Roselyn Sanchez) and Simon meet again and share a passionate moment. Jillian used to live in the same apartment that Caroline now occupies as a sublet. Caroline and Simon’s tepid relationship changes when they have a fierce argument before unexpectedly bonding over a passionate kiss. As a result, the couple reaches an agreement to end their hostilities.
This is also what usually happens in the enemies-to-lovers scenario, there is a will they won’t they suspense. As Caroline and Simon are thrown together and the odds against them get less and less, Caroline also learns how she was wrong about Simon all along. Caroline manages to figure out more about the women Simon shared a bed with.
That was probably one of the most thrilling things that I liked. Yes, there were women with whom Simon had sexual relations, but there was something else about it. He wasn’t loud and obnoxious and did not brag about being in a relationship. He appeared to be very protective towards the women and when Caroline made remarks that he considered derogatory, he would jump to the women’s defense.
There is also the factor that I saw admirable about Caroline, in the book Wallbanger, is the fact that she didn’t get into a relationship with Simon right away. They didn’t get into it immediately though. I liked the fact that they were childish with each other because it was obvious that Berglund and Serafini had fantastic chemistry. Serafini does a great job as Simon, and Berglund is fiery, no holds barred, and also incredibly charming. They each did an amazing job playing both the sweet parts where they were being nasty and the parts where they were hurling insults at each other.
When Simon and Caroline were ready to take their relationship to the next step, she followed him to Spain for one of his photography jobs. We could say that the distance helped them as they managed to sleep together there finally. However, for Caroline, the experience was not as good as what she thought it would be.
Finding “The Big O” again has been Caroline’s biggest disappointment ever since. After a terrible experience with a one-nighter who pretty much chased her orgasm away, she has never tried to get it back ever since. Caroline however assumed it would come back when she’s with a man she actually intends to stay with but sadly, it turned out otherwise. I thought that was probably one of the other things I liked about this story.
In my opinion, Simon was definitely capable of getting Caroline’s “big O” back for her but the book’s author changed that in favor of a more realistic approach. That was a twist because in most romance books I’ve read, if a woman has lost her “O”, the new guy invariably “rescues” her. I also re3ally liked that Caroline and Simon actually spoke about it, she explained her side of things to Simon who is quite sensitive about it and did not make it a self-centered issue.
Wallbanger is a romantic comedy where you can look forward to everything coming together (not literally though). This film has it all. There is some bartering of sorts through friends of Caroline and Simon where Sophia (Abbey May) Mimi (Cathy Ang) Neil (Cedrick Cooper) and Ryan (Colin Ford) have some unexpected roles. We also have some kitty chaos as Caroline’s pet cat, Clive, also is in the picture.
And a whole ton of pastries and cakes which already had my mouth watering. There is even a scene where Caroline has a fantasy and I’ll leave it at that. You really need to view the picture to see what I’m talking about and there is simply no substitute for that. In conclusion, I would have to say that Wallbanger was quite a good film. I would recommend this movie to any fan of romantic comedies without reservation.
