And So It Begins
And So It Begins
A shift in the paradigm of democracy is being witnessed around the globe, more so in the journalism sector. Filmed by Ramona S. Díaz, A Thousand Cuts focuses on the work of the impressing Online news site Rappler and its founder Maria Ressa, who is also a Nobel laureate. And So It Begins comes in as a sibling trying to plunge the spectators in the depth of intolerance and blind passion all in the name of restoring democracy ransacked by corruption.
Diaz also chronicles the presidential elections in the Philippines in 2022 specifically focusing on the contest between Leni Robredo and Bongbong Marcos and the issues of democracy. The latter’s agenda is totally undermining what is supposed to be the underpinnings of a democratic system and why Robredo’s stance is significant. In this digital age, Diaz gives an overview of what campaigning is in reality.
Robredo, who is a lawyer and civil leader, was the 14th vice president of the Philippines before contesting for a presidential seat in 2022. Marcos is the son of former president and dictator Ferdinand Marcos. By demonstrating these two candidates and their political agenda through them, for instance Robredo’s compassion and honor when facing Marcos’ absence of those characteristics, and Diaz hopes audience’s will not linger too much on these details, that audience’s will have some political context of their government background.
Addendum: Diaz’s film includes a good number of Robredo’s rallies – teeming with shades of pink since they are so full of movements – and she also decentralizes the charismatic character of programs or rallies. She sighs contentedly as she watches volunteers disillusioned supporters channel positive back forth energy within themselves, their organization, and indeed spread it out to the waning masses who believe in the possibilities of a better future through her.
For most part And So It Begins/Ressa comprises second half comments on government malfeasance in treating government unlike Resses colleagues themselves treat Marcos Laureates journalists over his loyal supporters and affiliates you such as Ressa heads making this small part of the narrative interesting focused on the things that were happening hoping to find space in the film that will be allowed.
While this film does capture some movement around Robredo herself however there isn’t precisely any political discourse happening at least not on presidential candidate level but more of it Ressa gets guts to interview her on interesting topics among which is the effect of the use of social media campaigns and unfriendly personal attacks that filled the web which is an interesting problem polarisation in politics especially in present day it being digital world but this one for example does not manage to go that far into problems foreground.
And So It Begins views today’s political media landscape with the most critical eyes. It is an interesting perspective about optimism, but it does not have a wider discourse. That said supporters passion for Robredo are real, at the same time, Ressa and her colleagues provide thoughtful insights which deserve more attention.
This documentary sheds light on what is dear to Diaz – the search for an answer to the question of where society is headed in the future, thereby positioning this work as a more completes one, in the context of other works.
