I Bring Joy
I Bring Joy
I Bring Joy (Rivers) is a young ballet dancer living in London. One night, she gets robbed and ends up killing the robber. The man was part of a local crime family and they seek to uncover the identity of his killer. Something changes within Joy and she becomes a killer which endears her to the gangsters more and more.
It is a rather emotional psychological thriller which is narrated via a recluse character who views things rather hopelessly. Joy has only a few friends and does not see eye to eye with her family members and spends most of her time seated in her apartment pondering over things.
The motivations for this become evident in the sense that later on we get some snippets of footage of a young man who is narrating the events that brought about her situation. The first killing she commits is out of necessity, but it morphs her into some kind of a hunter, one that preys on people who are as disturbed as she is.
She gets rid of whomever she considers evildoers because all of them are scapegoated but the question remains, why? What she does is wicked and then built on animosity such as stabbing, people in many places all over their bodies… However, in the midst of her committing those she is still going on with dance classes and even attempting drama where she talks about it over the phone and looking at the mirror and repeating sheets of Shakespeare. Plus she really does not like one dancer Meghan (Hayes)Two. Joy is shattered. Sad girls that bodies serve as a constant reminder of the last injury suffered in childhood and Rivers nails it.
At the same time, it is also clear how Floyd (Blake) develops the most as a character – … here are the tiny bits of development and character depth: he is shown to love his family, yet he engages in petty crime for their sustenance (which creates some form of depth in one of the characters).
However, what I hadn’t been expecting the interpretation of the anti-heroine anti-hero hermit turned was the greatest danger posed by Saul Dapp. I quote size alone. Enormously bearded muscular man makes pure fear follow him everywhere.
They should note ‘special lighting effects’ used within this film which contributes to the sense of unease and Ria-Belinda Mundell’s music which would be best described as eerie fits into this black film.
Although this is a story of murder, the perspective of the London underground and knife crime is also treated. This is how the twisted perspective of a character or pov who is portrayed as a young girl with issues of every nature stands out. It is purely a case of suspense thriller and all the dark underbelly
