Marakkuma Nenjam
Marakkuma Nenjam
A 2008 batch of students in Marakkuma Nenjam return to their school ten years later and spend three months together to reappear for their final examinations again. From the start, this premise requires a certain amount of suspension of disbelief from its audience. We have to buy into the world of the film, where all these grown adults have to leave their work, family and everything else behind just so they can go back to their school for three months.
Even when we do that, the film doesn’t come as a whole. Marakkuma Nenjam is one of those films that reminds us how important good actors are for a script’s successful transition onto the screen. Rakshan and Malina are unconvincing leads among an otherwise strong cast, which works against the film.
The central plotline of Marakkuma Nenjam is Karthik’s (Rakshan) unrequited love for Priyadharshini (Malina) even after all these years. But we don’t feel anything for Karthik or the love he has carried within him all these years because the flashback love portions from their school life does not create enough lingering feeling for us to understand why he loves this woman even now after ten years.
It doesn’t mean that an individual cannot love someone even after having no contact with them for a decade. It can happen; our movies have shown us that too. Take 96, for instance. When Ram (a grown man) sees Jaanu after years, he can’t look into her eyes. But we get everything that’s happening because the gravity of their initial separation hit way harder and also due to Vijay Sethupathi’s solid display of emotions.
But here, the actors don’t make us root for them. Having said that, along with rest cast members being more convincing during reunion portions itself, leads are much better there themselves too. School-time scenes feel like grown-up folks pretending to be kids with their exaggerated mannerisms of what a teenager should be like. But Dheena, as Karthik’s best friend Salim, is strong throughout and clearly the star performer among cast.
However, all being said and done, Sachin Warrier’s soundtrack is the clear highlight of Marakkuma Nenjam that does justice for more than the film itself even could have hoped to achieve.
