Plan B
Plan B
Plan B: The focal point of the narrative is the character of Nirali Vora (Tamannaah Bhatia) who works as a matchmaker and considers marriage joyful for everyone except herself, and Kaustubh Chougule (Riteish Deskmukh), a reputable divorce lawyer. They are poles apart but can they be expected to become one, against every possible odd?
For Kaustubh aka Kosty, “kaash meri shaadi honay wali hai, magar bas bedroom se boredom ka safar hain.” He treats life with a certain guarded skepticism, shrouded in mystery. Now throw into the mix a girl who wants to continue her mother’s matchmaking business, and who is in every personal and professional way the exact opposite of him. Such are the encounters when these two characters meet in the film, one knows what to expect. Ideally, that would snuff out the suspense factor, except that it’s the characterizations and their amusing banters that keep you hooked.
The relationship between the protagonists is the best part of director Shashanka Ghosh’s ‘Plan A Plan B’. Ghosh, however, proves to be unable to replicate the awe of his previous film, ‘Veere Di Wedding’. Although the premise written by Rajat Aroraa (who also co-produced) is far from original in terms of creativity, it does provide an ideal backdrop to which romance and comedy can be embedded. However, what we think the plot could have benefitted from was a tad bit more detail in the backstories of Kosty and Nirali so that the audience would be more empathic towards them.
In this case, one gets the most out of knowing these people and their many-layered personalities, but not from experiencing the characters on a journey of growth, change or self-discovery. There are not a great number of turns and the plot is unremarkable. The moments are paced slowly, but evenly, while there are points which are memorable. There will be few features in this romantic drama that are not affected, to some degree, by the music.
Riteish Deshmukh is overall very composed delivering his cynical character Kosty in this project. He is able to capture the audience’s attention with his comedic timing even as he and his behavior appear off. Tamannaah Bhatia succeeds in portraying both Nirali’s vulnerability and fierceness at the same time. Their shared dislike for each other adds an interesting dimension to their personalities. But what we do not see is the lead couple consistently burning the sheets. They do enjoy each other’s performance individually, but when they fall in love, nothing feels organic.
Poonam Dhillon impresses as Nirali’s mother even though her role has limited screen time. The rest of the supporting characters however, including Kusha Kapila, Raghav Aggarwal, and Dilshad Patel, are typecast as Nirali and Kosty’s friends. Prithviraj Uday Sarnaik’s Kabeer character is one of the most entertaining characters in the film.
This 106-minute film is quite theatrical in its nature and so fans of the ‘opposites attract’ concept might find things rather comfortable as it is predictable. It does not in any case reach the level of the cult romantic flicks indeed, such as Jab We Met, Hum Tum, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and so forth, from which you can get the cringe every now and then. However, it would not be a complete waste of time to view the film ‘Plan A Plan B’ to get a brief glimpse of two such persons who are just two worlds apart.
