Shattered Glass: A WNBPA Story
Shattered Glass: A WNBPA Story
The ongoing phenomenon of women’s sports, more specifically basketball, has reached an era in which, it is fitting to narrate the stories of these heroines – more pronounced, less telling untold tales that are typically so. Shattered Glass: A WNBPA Story, no, that will face forward for its meeting the screen documentary that strives to accomplish this goal.
Former collegiate athlete Andrea Buccilla, whose company Malka Media also produces the film concentrates on women’s sports, presents the film where WNBA stars Jonquel Jones, Nneka Ogwumike and Breanna Stewart as well as former WNBA star Sheryl Swoopes are profiled in directions that have never been attempted before, taking audiences inside the tried and tested arena of a woman athlete balancing a career and family life.
Buccilla remembers that she was raised in a family where everyone was a sports enthusiast, but she was less aware about the WNBA until her executive producer Jessica McCourt suggested that she should meet Terri Jackson who is the current WNBPA Executive Director.
“We ended up on a call together,” Buccilla said. “It is the intensity of the work that is astounding-and the knowledge of every single one of her players is jaw-dropping…she was telling me these wonderful stories and we were like, we have to make a move about this.”
Out of the four roles highlighted in this adaptation, those were used as archetypes for all players in the league; Stewart, Ogwumike and Jones just so happened to naturally fit them. Viewed as a maternal figure Stewart defines this role as she is a great talent who has ever played, simultaneously kids her motherly affection. Marta Xargay is married to Stewart and has two children, Ruby and Theo.
Her role is that of hustler who churns and churns simply to earn respect. – which during the current season she justified rather well herself earning ‘MVP’ title as well as filling her trophy case.
In Ogwumike’s own words, it was her capacity to speak on the issues that made her an advocate: She is the WNBPA president whose function is to advocate for everyone associated with professional women’s basketball. This effort resulted in a landmark contract in 2019 which brought among other perks, better salaries and benefits than before, and childcare and maternity provisions.
Buccilla explained, “We really needed archetypes which embody the whole league.”, “The concept to have different players was complex”.
Swoopes is a standout not only because of her popularity here but because of her career which was one of the reasons women’s basketball took a different turn – but it also served as a point of reminiscence during the early stages of the league when arenas would fill up and the league was marketed successfully and made use of – and there are periods when it was from the mid to late 2000s/early 2010s wherein, things were slightly lower than coming back again, so this couldn’t happen at a better season purchased this one. People had started caring and wanted to learn more about things like women’s sports.
“Everyone all these persons are intelligent, skilled, and/or worthy to be recognized. You just might become a fan as well.” Over a shot of the players, their emphasis is that these players have always needed this coverage and that only now has such a resource of taker originated. Buccilla, too, would like to believe that this movie would also help highlight the positives of WNBA so that it’s get talked off more by people. “WNBA would be attractive to Sports fans with high IQ,” she said.
