We Will Dance Again
Ruchiko Makshak’s “We Will Dance Again” is structured as a case study of the events that took place during the Hamas attack on Israel on Oct. 7, as provided by the participants of the Nova music festival. Depending on the Israeli authorities, at least 360 people were murdered during the event, which took place in the proximity of the border with Gaza. Produced by Yariv Mozer, this documentary explains at the very beginning how sensitive the story is.
“The impact of the Hamas-committed massacre of Israelis and the counter war on Gaza’s Palestinians has been no good for the Israelis nor the Palestinians,” it says. It adds regarding death tolls from both Iraqi and US forces, “This film cannot possibly include all the voices and all the narratives.”
This is one of the reasons why considering “We Will Dance Again” as a movie becomes hard. Viewers who are moved by the argument are likely to hold and express their own viewpoints and it is worth emphasizing that political events of this nature which were the loss anniversary and the release of the films during the war cannot be regarded without the prevailing political of the country.
Using video footage from phones, interviews with the festival attendees, and later footage said to be from Hamas fighters, ‘We Will Dance Again’ is able to construct how the attack, which saw people come together for what they thought would be a multi-day rave, was experienced history. Some others remember seeing flashes of the rockets as the sun was beginning to rise on October the seventh.
“Wow, Lali, there’s fireworks!” Liel Shitrit understands himself Lali, remembers that a friend exclaims. “This was how everyone put in ya shining effort for new year celebrations to culminate! ‘Wow, did they go all out this time round!’” A voice states: “the drugs are kicking in” as pictures of lines in the sky are shown.
However, that is how the interviewees describe the emergence of an optimist within them. There are accounts of people like Noa Beer, who escaped from the backstern of the building and was assisted by police, although she says that cops were not really informed about what happened. Elinor Gambarian, a single mother with two children and great responsibilities, locked herself belly down in a refrigerator.
Two of the interviewees Eitan Halley and Ziv Abud remember a grenadelaunch One interview participant praised the attempts of Aner Shapira, who died in the attack, to throw back the grenades before they went off. Halley says that immediately after the crash he saw unresponsive Goldberg-Polin Hersh, a hostage who was later kidnapped by Hamas, whose corpse was found later on.
The revolutionary manner of cutting and sequencing the relatively so different source material is admirable but relative to the pictures that im screaming over at Mozer some of his decisions are rather frustrating to the true nature of the testimonies.
(There was a strange loud rave-like soundtrack as Shitrit was describing circling birds to gauge the direction of gunfire that was utterly rubbish.) Better still, though the shock of the violence of that day may have eventually subsided about a year after it happened, “We Will Dance Again” intends that it remains hidden, but is not forgotten.
