The Watchers
The Watchers
The Watchers is a new horror film that is currently in theaters. Fans of the director M. Night Shyamalan will be glad to know that his daughter Ishana Shyamalan has made this film. The main character of the story is a young painter known as Mina. She gets herself stuck in the endless matriarchs rural forest of Ireland and becomes incarcerated with three strangers called Ciara, Madelina and Daniel.
Every night, it appears, strange beings are lurking somewhere in the dark, carefully “watching” the group from behind unseen walls, anxious to make their move. As there are some very strict parameters that Chinetwork has to adhere to and a great deal of fissures in the mythos, grounded as she is in what she has been taught, Mina starts questioning the reality of it all.
What are Watchers?
Watchers are mythological race in cinema who are often referred to as ‘Changelings’ or “Faeries” as they are known by people. They are a species of creatures that tend to observe in order to learn how to impersonate, which they find us so useful to do. Madeline however depicts the mortals as ‘playthings to them’ which is the justification as to why this race would not want to be free.
Evidently, the woods seem to have a site, that causes visions too, reminiscent of the foreign forwarded ‘Point of No Return’ wherever this will be found, will also be found, (and like a compass, they all align in a ring around the forest). If they remain within the confines there is a possibility of safely returning home. If they don’t? Well…that would not be nearly as good.
The Watchers are slender elongated beings whose duty is to guard the forest. They tower at roughly 2.7 meters in height and are both terrifying and vicious. Although very first instincts were to implant doubts of such entities in the form of paranoia, the latter part of the film reveals that they actually do exist in the world.
They utilizing fascinated by human beings and have been appreciating them the whole time. It was Maddie who walked into the trees, of her own accord, because she felt like it and knew what lay in the depth of the woods. She witnessed The Watchers and even hunted by herself. Out in the woods, she found a pathetic copy of her, taller and skinnier. When this story comes up, it feels right and helps deposit suspense creation in the future. Well, more on that later.
What is the etiquette of the forest?
In a few sentences, there was no clear starting point – Ciara has ‘lived’ in the forest for 85 months while Madeline has been here “a lot longer.” Longer than even the longest timeline offered here. Daniel has lived only for this forest flex for 8 months. In explaining some of the rules, Madeline does specify some of them, including:
The reason for these rules stems from, the Watchers themselves, who decided to act like the human race only in artificial surroundings. They wished to witness the humans in their actual environment and staying in the light, with their faces to the mirror would at best be inexperienced immitators of the humans.
The professor was doing something we won’t find out until late in the movie, but it seemed that this professor had been studying the Watchers for a very long time. There is a bunker inside “the coop” and it has smell-televisions, smell-computers and smell beds. It seems that his research is the stronghold known as Wonder Land. The Professor is aware of the Watchers and that they have taken on his form and mannerisms.
When the bunker was being constructed, the Professor anywhere assigned Watcher’s workers to also provide food to the Watchers. He did try to see if it is possible to grasp the power of duplications and caught one of the Watchers in order to carry out some tests.
The last video that is the final video from the Professor is the one that records 300 days of activities that have been taking place inside the woods. But at this point, a 300-day personary image will appall him without sweating. There was a request to anybody watching this mess which was for them to go into his office and ‘break’ everything in sight. So as to escape, they had to ‘follow the birds’ to where a boat was located.
Why is it that Mina is not able to adhere to the regulations?
Mina’s instances of misbehavior can be traced back to her childhood, information which is revealed to us through a flashback. It describes the events of a dreadful motor vehicle collision in which Mina along with her sister and their mother was hit by a heavy lorry.
However, it happened, as Mina was playing with the window and her other mother ‘forgot’ and was not observing the road. At this point, we do not know that Mina’s sister Lucy was still alive although we find out about this later on in the movie.
As the group escapes and gets to the boat, Miri redeems Daniel only to have him killed by one of the Watchers who appears as John the missing husband of Ciara seen earlier in the movie. All the rest of the Changelings sit in their boat, which they do to stand out as they ride out.
What does Mina discover while at university?
Mina makes her way to the university and takes a look at the work done by the Professor. It is entitled “The Halfling Dilemma” and explores the fae and what they were before they became the savage monsters. There are scrolls declaring that they resided with us as friends Please remove.
Friends I can understand but what is this about as ‘lovers’? Children born from human and fae were known as Halflings, they were capable of mating. They were able to even turn into the dead. This is what gave him the impulse to turn to research; it was plain he was trying to do the impossible and bring back the dead and using those ‘Watchers’ in the woods was his way of going about it.
As we soon learn at the last minute, in the graphic novel, it was really Madeline, who was both a lover and partner of the Professor. The problem is that Madeline’s obituary states that she died in 2001. And there is an obituary entry for her. And this explains why during all the time, she was in the forest, and did not escape from it. She was not able to. Perhaps, the Professor’s footage of a changeling, which was with him in a bunker, featured Madeline and she was in this place all this while.
What makes her stand out from the rest of the Watchers is that she is human too. It is how she is able to range freely in the sun, and in this way supports that certain witticism about how she has been here for “a lot longer” describing the reasons for the limits on the Watcher’s knowledge. Finally, that Changeling story, is most likely true, but may also illustrate when the Watcher practiced impersonation of the real Madeline for the first time in her entire life.
Does The Watchers have an ending?
When we learn that Madeline is a Watcher, Mine appears to face her. But she ends up putting out Ciara and attacks Mina. Madeline says that they cast her out from the group of Watchers because she could somehow tolerate the light and therefore remained all this time by herself.
Mina attempts to reason with her by sympathizing with her situation. Madeline never wished for her to be frightened. She clarifies that Madeline is a human faerie hybrid, and she is capable of banishing hatred- in return for humanity, of course. Madeline understands these words, shatters the glass, and flies off. Before she departs, she states, “I hope you are right Mina.”
Now that Madeline has left, Mina reconciles with her sister. She narrates everything and another character, Mina inquires that Madeline must be there watching over her the way an angel would. This is a very charming way of remembering the time, when the fae and human lived in harmony.
